Renowned for its breath-taking beauty, lush forests, majestic snow-capped peaks, and delectable fruits such as apples, pears, cherries, walnuts, and irresistibly flavorful grapes, the valley has become a hub for those seeking the unconventional healing powers of leeches. In order to thrive, these fruits necessitate typical climatic conditions, moderate rainfall, ample sunlight, and a keen focus from the relevant department. In the Repora area of Central Kashmir's Ganderbal district, a variety of delicious fruits, including grapes, can be found.
In the central Kashmir district of Ganderbal, nestled amidst the majestic Great Himalayan range, lies the charming village of Repora. This idyllic hamlet has gained recognition for its delightful grapes, which have become a sought-after crop throughout the region of Jammu and Kashmir. Nearly every household in Repora partakes in the cultivation of these grapes, as they have emerged as a lucrative source of income.
According to experts, Repora grapes possess a significant advantage in that they ripen during a time when fresh grapes are unavailable globally, with the exception of Italy.
In a noteworthy development, the largest production has been reported at Mode Vineyard, located in Kralbagh within the Lar block. This vineyard, established by the esteemed Horticulture department, has achieved remarkable success in terms of production. In a remarkable feat, a sprawling yard spanning 188 hectares has been dedicated to grape production. This vast expanse of land has become a thriving hub for cultivating this beloved fruit. Year after year, the yard consistently yields an impressive annual production of 385 metric tones, showcasing the dedication and expertise of those involved in this fruitful endeavor. In an annual tradition, the Horticulture department has once again sublet the entirety of their yard to contractors for cultivation. As part of this arrangement, contractors have submitted bids in order to secure the rights to utilize the yard for their cultivation purposes.
ADSIn a development concerning the global grape industry, it has been revealed that the widely recognized benchmark for superior grapes is characterized by a berry size ranging between 4 and 5 grams. In a stunning display of agricultural prowess, Repora's grapes have achieved a remarkable size, tipping the scales at an impressive 14-15 grams. This astonishing feat far exceeds the global standards set for grape size. During a visit a few years ago, a team of experts was left astounded when they discovered a single grape weighing an impressive 15 grams. This remarkable achievement remains unmatched anywhere else in the world. In local markets, the demand for these exceptional grapes has resulted in premium prices. Sahibi grapes are currently being sold at RS 250 per kg, while Hussaini grapes are priced at Rs 200 per kg.
In the village, a diverse range of grape varieties, including Hussaini, Sahibi, Kishmish, Anabeshai, and Ruby, are currently being cultivated by the local farmers. Once the grapes are fully grown and ready for harvest, a large number of customers eagerly flock to the village to obtain the bountiful yield. In every village household, bunches of various grape varieties can be found hanging, while orchards are teeming with an abundance of grapes that captivate the attention of every passer-by.
In a remarkable display of community spirit, officials and villagers recently convened at a grape orchard in the first week of August to commemorate a "special day" dedicated to raising awareness about this beloved fruit. The event served as a platform to emphasize the significance of this fruit and its role in our lives.
In a remarkable display of agricultural ingenuity, vineyards have successfully implemented a conscientious approach towards pesticide usage, with some even opting for the complete elimination of these chemicals. The outcome? Not only has the pristine quality of the grapes been safeguarded, but an unexpected surge in production has also been witnessed. In a significant development for the village, the implementation of modern techniques such as trellis systems and hail nets has brought about notable advancements in both production and protection.
